The Baton Rouge Hot Air Balloon Championship 2011 festival will be at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center August 5-7, 2011 in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge annually hosts a major Hot Air Balloon event. It is a very popular event and it everyone tends to bring the entire family to see the balloons.

This is located at www.cajunradio.org/batonrougehotairballoon.html

GENERAL BALLOON INFO
No pets or ice chests. Encouraged to bring your own lawn chairs. The Pennington Biomedical Research center property faceS Perkins Road. There is a street that runs perpendicular to Perkins called Kenilworth Parkway. The majority of the 5000 parking spaces are next to Perkins Road, but there are also some spaces at the other end of Kenilworth Parkway. You can think of the area as one big square with the area bordering on Perkins Road and bisected by Kennilworth Parkway. On the west side of Kennilworth is the Balloon area. All activities will take place on the Pennington property. The Children's Village will be open August 5th and 6th, from 3pm 8pm. The Children's Village will include a host of FREE activities and fun for the entire family. Some of the activities include: pony rides, rock wall, inflatables, face painting, arts and crafts, and much more. The Children's Village is located on the Pennington property near the line of shady cypress trees on the northwest side of the Balloon field.

DIRECTIONS:
6400 Perkins Rd, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808

From New Orleans:
From I-10 headed west, take the Essen Lane exit. After exiting, take a left and go back under the interstate. Stay on this road and cross the railroad track. Take a right at the Perkins Road/Essen Lane intersection (there is an Albertsons grocery store to the right). Then pass through two red lights. The Pennington Center is on the left in the next block.

From Baton Rouge Airport: Take I-110 south which turns into I-10. At that split, take I-10 east. Exit on Perkins Road. Turn left onto Perkins Road. The Pennington Center is located on the right after several blocks.

From Lafayette/Alexandria: From I-10 headed east, cross the Mississippi River bridge. Take the Perkins Road exit to your right. Turn left onto Perkins Road. The Pennington Center is located on the right after several blocks.

PARKING-There are thousands of parking spaces on the Pennington property and at the BREC Park across Kenilworth. No roads will be blocked, city police will be directing traffic. Coming from the north, you should plan to enter the parking area of the site off Perkins Road. Coming from the south you can use Kenilworth Parkway to enter the Parking lot.

Balloon Competition- Each morning you should plan to be seated at the field by 6:30 to see what many people believe is the best time to see ALL the balloons flying and it is generally cooler in the morning. The balloons will take off upwind from the field and will fly over Pennington as they drop a bean-bag marker onto a target.

Balloon Mass Ascension- Friday and Saturday at 6:30 PM balloons will set-up on the Pennington field and take-off. This event permits the crowd to walk about the field and visit the crews. It is a great time to take close-up pictures of the inflation process. Also one balloon will take off as the hare and soon after the other balloons will chase the hare as the hounds.

Balloon Glow- Friday and Saturday evenings after sunset, many people make a special trip to see the balloon glow that resembles huge lighted ornaments. Half of the balloons (approx. 30+) will inflate on the Pennington field and flash their burners synchronized to the announcer's instructions; "all burn","twinkle burn", etc.

Parachute Team- The Black Daggers are the official U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team. Their mission is to perform live aerial demonstrations in support of Army Special Operations community relations and recruiting.

Fireworks- The skies will glow with spectacular fireworks on Friday and Saturday night at 9:30pm, following the balloon glow, and will provide a dramatic grand finale. This display is quickly gaining recognition as the best fireworks show in the area.

Children's Village- BREC's Children's Village has expanded to include a host of activities, artists, food, and fun for the entire family. Some of the free activities include: pony rides, water slides/inflatables, rock wall, face painting, arts and crafts, and much more. For more information visit www.brec.org/specialevents.

The event is free and open to the public with food and gift booths on site, including a BREC-sponsored children's playground, which is also free. Parking is free but limited. Visitors are encouraged not only to carpool, but also to bring a blanket and a camera.
