Cajun Heritage, by Maurice Lasserre (225.293.4848)
Melon sent-bon, good smelling melon; wild green-striped melons about the size of golf balls that turn yellow in late summer. The vines, flesh, and seeds resemble that of cucumbers. They emit a pleasant odor and readily eaten by deer and rabbits. Theyre called smelling melons or de sent-bon in New Orleans, and getting whacked by one stung much more than a snowball.
Memere a dit, Grandma said, Soit tarrive pas ou tu depasses, Toujours queques sous qui manaquent pour faire la piaster, whether you dont do enough (you fail) or you do too much (you excel), theres always a few cents lacking to make up a dollar. Meaning, in your endeavors, there always seems to be something lacking, something that could have been done better, or differently. From a recording by Jimmy Aguillard.

Passer du caf, to pass (handout) coffee. Before air-conditioning, porches were favorite places to sit after supper, while waiting for bedrooms to cool down. Cajuns usually built their houses so at least one porch was shaded in late afternoons, where friends could visit and talk, play music or listen to prize fights on the radio. The lady of the house always served coffee, and the cups were passed out until everybody had their own cup. Because a pot only held so much coffee, it was dripped strong and black, and this helped to make up for the small swallow that you would get (tite goutte). Listen to Hadley Castile talk about this on his CD about The Sharecroppers House.

Cajuns and Coal-Oil
Huile de lampe, or huile a charbon (lamp or coal oil), and a gallon was only a nickel. We used kerosene for lighting, cooking and heating. It was dabbed on cuts and bruises, on the harness sores of draft animals to kill maggots, rubbed on dogs for fleas, or on childrens hair to kill nits, in an emulsion of soapy water (lavement) for pin worms, and a drop or two in honey for coughs. Old engines ran better on a gasoline-kerosene mixture than on diesel. Help us name this device that was used to fool ants. Large sewing needles were spaced to allow single ants to cross, but if several ants met while crossing, they invariably fell into the kerosene. Set near fig trees, the trap killed ants by the cupful.
