New Orleans area In the French Quarter, check out Pat O'Brian's and the Old Abstiste Bar. Pat O'Brian's is known for it's distinctive New Orleans outdoor courtyard and its sing-along piano bar. The old Abstiste Bar is where the Pirate Jean Lafitte used to hang out years ago. North of Lafayette area Saturday is the day to be in the Eunice, Louisiana area. Saturday morning starts off with a Cajun band at Fred's Lounge from 9am-1pm in Mamou. Saturday afternon starts with the tour of the Liberty Theatre cultural center in Eunice. Around 6:00 pm Saturday evening, the Liberty Theatre plays host to the Cajun version of the Grand Ole Opra. Later that evening, head to nearby Opelousas to visit two famous zydeco clubs - Richard's club and Slim's Y-Ki-Ki. These two clubs are out in the country about a half mile apart. Lafayette area In Lafayette, there is a recreation of an 1800's Cajun village called Vermillionville that is highly recommended. Also, check out Randal's cajun restaurant and dance hall. There are a couple of great old dance halls called Hamilton's and Grant Street that might have Louisiana music on the night that you go. In nearby Breaux Bridge, there is the old cajun dance hall called "La Poussiere". This translates to "the dust" in english - it used to have a dirt floor and it got pretty dusty when people used to dance. Cafe des Amis is also in Breaux Bridge and it hosts a zydeco breakfast. Cafe de Amis has a Bed and Breakfast that is highly recommended. Just East of Lafayette is Whiskey River Landing and the town of Henderson. These are on the edge of the atchafalaya swamp and has places where you can get a swamp tour. You may want to print out a copy of the radio stations listed in the "AM/FM - Louisiana" section of this site to bring with you. As you travel, try to pick up different stations. Some of the radio stations reach a long way. When traveling from the east, it is a great pleasure to be able to hear South Louisiana station KLEB 1600 AM from as far away as Mobile. If you are coming from the west or north, there are numerous specialty shows that you can pick up. Just check the show times and give it a try.
